Personal Mythology

Mythology is mans way of explaining the world around them. Man uses mythology to try to answer the unanswered questions of our existence. All cultures mythology shares common themes and stories. Every culture has creation myths trying to answer the question of where we came from. Every culture has myths surrounding death and the after life trying to answer the question what happens when we die. we use mythology to teach lessons about morality and mans struggle between good and evil. We use mythology to make since of hard times in our life. We use mythology to explain a childes development in to adult hood. We use mythology to explain weather. I believe that having a personal mythology created of symbols and meanings allows your sub conches to relate messages about your self from the whole that allow you to better understand what you are going through/ experiencing in the world. This gives you a better understanding of what you need in your life to create balance.

My Personal mythology came to me when I read the book “King Warrior Magician Lover” (By Robert More and Douglas Gillette). This book uses these archetypes of the king, the Warrior, the Magician and the Lover to depict the development of boy psychology to man psychology. This book helped me to understand the way my brain thinks. I wanted to come up with a physical representation of the archetypes as animals. I wanted to create a symbol for each archetype. I chose the serpent to represent the king. The bison to represent the warrior. The bird to represent the magician. The bear to represent the lover. I started to draw these animals, I would study the key characteristics needed to depict them. Once competent in drawing each archetype I moved on to draw at random. I would find myself in patterns of drawing horned figures when I needed to channel my inner warrior. I would draw bird like creatures when i was feeling extra creative. I would draw serpent when I needed to command my realm and create balance. i found my sub conches communicating with me through these symbols I chose to give meaning to. This is why it is my goal to further expand my own personal mythology to better understand myself.
