In Joseph Campbells book “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” He analyses the similarities throughout the worlds mythologies. one common myth most cultures have is a fire myth. Fire is responsible for so much in the evolution of man. some scientist credit fire giving us the ability to cook meat as the reason the human brain doubled in size, we were able to make the nutrients easier to digest. fire also gave us light, we were no longer restricted to the light of the sun. This allowed man to work during the day and educate himself at night. it could be said that fire is synonymous with knowledge in mythology. Something that most fire myths have in common though is that it is property of the gods and is stolen to be given to humanity. There is always a punishment for the hero who risks it all to give fire to the people. This is something I ponder, Why do multiple cultures associate a punishment with this knowledge of fire?
